Native America Calling

Show: Violence Against Transgender Natives
Date: Friday, June 26, 2009
Link: http://www.nativeamericacalling.com/ram/2009/june/062609.m3u
Summary (from NAC website):
The soon to be released film "Two Spirits" examines the murder of Fred Martinez, a Navajo who was a " nádleehí " - a male-bodied person with a feminine essence.  A good number of the major movements across Native America are designed to protect human rights and open up dialogue about people who are disenfranchised. Why is it that when it comes to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of Native America, this position wanes and people tend to look the other way? Why are negative behaviors, even violence, acceptable when it comes to the LGBT community? Guests include Lydia Nibley, director/"Two Spirits." and Dr. Wesley K. Thomas (Diné) Academic Dean/Division of Humanities and Social-Behavioral Sciences at Diné College.

Native America Calling

Show: Fighting the Stigma of HIV and AIDS
Date: December 1, 2008
Link: http://nac.unm.edu/archives/2008/dec/120108.mp3
Summary (from NAC website): When a survivor of cancer or diabetes declares their status, the tendency is to applaud their recovery. But often, when an HIV survivor makes the same declaration, the reaction is much different. Often their condition is met with negativity, not only in how they are received as tribal people but, also in terms of funding and public awareness. As World AIDS 2008 is observed, how are HIV and AIDS survivors fighting the stigma? Guests are Isadore Boni (San Carlos Apache), HIV/AIDS survivor and awareness advocate, and Kory Montoya (Jicarilla Apache), HIV/AIDS survivor and awareness educator.

Show: Same-Sex Marriage on Reservations
Date: September 10, 2008
Link: http://nac.unm.edu/archives/2008/sep/091008.mp3
Summary (from NAC website): The Coquille Tribe of Oregon recently passed a law recognizing same-sex marriage, believed to be the first such tribe to do so. This action is raising questions concerning who has control over domestic relations on tribal lands. The Coquille Tribe says their federal recognition gives them authority over this issue, even though the State of Oregon amended the state constitution in 2004 prohibiting gay marriage. The Navajo and Cherokee tribes have also passed laws prohibiting gay marriage. Where do you stand on the issue of same-sex marriage? Our guests are Kitzen Branting (Coquille) and Navajo Nation council representative Larry Anderson.

Show:
Being Native & Being Lesbian
Date: June 18, 2008
Guests: Sharon Day (Ojibwe) and Beverly Little Thunder (Lakota)
Link: http://www.nativeamericacalling.com/ram/2008/june/061808.m3u
Summary (from NAC website): It’s Pride Week and communities across the country will be holding parades and marches celebrating their two-spirit members this weekend. But what about in Native villages and on reservations, will there be any special festivities? When we talk about the LGBT community, we sometimes overlook lesbians and their unique issues and challenges. Do Native lesbians have a tougher time than Native gay men? Guests include Sharon Day (Ojibwe), Executive Director of the Indigenous Peoples Task Force and Beverly Little Thunder (Lakota), a Native lesbian activist and founder of a women-only Sundance.

Link: http://www.nativeamericacalling.com/ram/2007/july/070607.m3u
Summary (from NAC website): When you are young and face the challenges of the world, sometimes it takes courage. For young Natives who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or a transgender who decide to come out and talk about who they are, courage is what brings them to express themselves. How are young Natives finding the courage to come out about their sexuality? How are they dealing with the hostility and discrimination, both in and out of tribal communities? Guests include Ryan Bowker from the Cheyenne River Sioux and recipient of the Colin Higgins Foundation Youth Courage Award.

Show: Homosexuality: How Do You Handle the News?
Date: October 10, 2007
Link: http://www.nativeamericacalling.com/ram/2007/oct/101007.m3u
Summary (from NAC website): October 11th is National Coming Out Day. It’s the 20th birthday of the unfurling of the AIDS Quilt on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Since then, some of the stigma attached to being gay has been washed away. Still, the news about a loved one’s homosexuality can come as a big surprise to friends and family. How would you handle the news? Have you ever had someone in your inner circle come out to you? Are you planning on using today as a springboard to a more open lifestyle? Guests include Native comedian Charlie Ballard and author/gay rights advocate Eric Marcus.
