On June 28th First Nations Radio celebrated LGBT Native Pride with "Two-Spirits" filmmaker Lydia Nibley, Two-Spirited Canadian filmmaker Lorne Olson (film: "Our Place in the Circle"), and Cristoso Apache from the Two Spirit Society of Denver. The Two Spirit Society of Denver are hosting the 21st Annual International Two Spirit Gathering in Estes Park, Colorado on October 7-11, 2009.
First Nations Radio is a KFAI program hosted by Richard Lafortune (National Director of the Two Spirit Press Room), Laura Waterman Wittstock, Rhiana Yazzie, and Wade Keezer. KFAI is a non-commercial FM radio station operating on 90.3 MHz in Minneapolis and 106.7 MHz in St Paul. Click here to listen to the show.

The soon to be released film "Two Spirits" examines the murder of Fred Martinez, a Navajo who was a " nádleehí " - a male-bodied person with a feminine essence. A good number of the major movements across Native America are designed to protect human rights and open up dialogue about people who are disenfranchised. Why is it that when it comes to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of Native America, this position wanes and people tend to look the other way? Why are negative behaviors, even violence, acceptable when it comes to the LGBT community? Guests include Lydia Nibley, director/"Two Spirits." and Dr. Wesley K. Summary (from NAC website): When a survivor of cancer or diabetes declares their status, the tendency is to applaud their recovery. But often, when an HIV survivor makes the same declaration, the reaction is much different. Often their condition is met with negativity, not only in how they are received as tribal people but, also in terms of funding and public awareness. As World AIDS 2008 is observed, how are HIV and AIDS survivors fighting the stigma? Guests are Isadore Boni (San Carlos Apache), HIV/AIDS survivor and awareness advocate, and Kory Montoya (Jicarilla Apache), HIV/AIDS survivor and awareness educator.

Summary (from NAC website): The Coquille Tribe of Oregon recently passed a law recognizing same-sex marriage, believed to be the first such tribe to do so. This action is raising questions concerning who has control over domestic relations on tribal lands. The Coquille Tribe says their federal recognition gives them authority over this issue, even though the State of Oregon amended the state constitution in 2004 prohibiting gay marriage. The Navajo and Cherokee tribes have also passed laws prohibiting gay marriage. Where do you stand on the issue of same-sex marriage? Our guests are Kitzen Branting (Coquille) and Navajo Nation council representative Larry Anderson.
